Ferris Bueller is the star of the much beloved Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, a movie directed in 1986 by John Hughes. If you haven’t seen the movie, it essentially follows the adventures of Ferris, his friend Cameron, and his (Ferris’) girlfriend Sloane.
They do a bunch of cool stuff, including impersonating a Sausage King, attending a baseball game, going to a museum, and (in the case of Ferris) joining a parade and singing along to Twist and Shout. It’s a harmless movie, that is funny and smart enough to have an enduring audience to this day. One of the more notable things about Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is that Ferris breaks the fourth wall and sometimes speaks directly to the audience.
Wade Wilson is the star of the much beloved Deadpool, a movie directed in 2016 by Tim Miller. If you haven’t seen the movie, it essentially follows the adventures of Wade Wilson, and his alter ego Deadpool, his friend Weasel, and his (Wade’s) girlfriend Vanessa.
They do a bunch of cool stuff, including killing lots of people, making fun of a blind woman, and (in the case of Wade and Vanessa) having a lot of sex. It’s a harmless enough movie, that is funny and smart enough to succeed, and become the highest grossing R rated movie of all time. One of the more notable things about Deadpool is that Wade Wilson breaks the fourth wall and sometimes speaks directly to the audience.
So, based upon the overwhelming evidence I have presented so far, it must be quite clear to you now that Ferris Bueller is actually Wade Wilson, who in turn is actually Deadpool.
Wait, what? You don’t believe me? Hruhhh, Fine, I guess I’ll show my math.
Although on the surface it doesn’t seem like the happy-go-lucky, fun loving Ferris would have much, if anything, in common with the possibly unhinged, definitely murderous, mercenary Wade Wilson, a closer analysis reveals a surprising amount of similarities.
For one, they are both constantly cracking jokes, and refuse to take any situation seriously. They both hang around primarily with one spineless, wimpy sidekick, and a girlfriend who is totally game with their partner’s zany behavior.
But here’s where it get’s really good. Both frequently break the fourth wall and talk directly to the audience. Both make pop culture references all the time. Both are eccentric and march to the beat of their own drum. And both wasted their potential to have fun.
So here’s how the lovable Ferris Bueller became the Merc with a Mouth.
Ferris Bueller and Cameron graduate from high school. The two drift apart after Cameron’s decision to attend a school far away, and Ferris’s inability to deal with no longer receiving the attention he did in school.
Ferris eventually holds a string of mediocre jobs, much to the disappointment of his family and friends, including Sloane, who eventually breaks up with him.
This is the wake up call Ferris needs to turn his life around and so he joins the United States Army, much to the dismay of his parents.
Despite his disregard for authority, and quirky personality, Ferris quickly rises up the ranks, and is eventually chosen for a special Black Ops unit that specializes in infiltration of indigenous populations.
His identity as Ferris Bueller is erased, and is replaced by that of Wade Wilson.
The first test for the recruits is in Jacksonville Florida. While there Wade/Ferris is given horrible news. (Likely that Cameron has died). Unable to cope, he acts out and is Dishonorably Discharged from the service.
Wade is now alone, and without anyone in the world to care about him. This combined with the knowledge of his failures begin to drive him slightly mad, and set him upon the path towards becoming Deadpool.
It only get’s worse for Wade when he realizes that the audience only he can see has slowly stopped caring about him. (This explains why he does the same post credits scene in Deadpool as he did in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off-he’s clinging to his glory days).
See, it all checks out. A charismatic, underachieving kid; joins the army, is rejected, goes insane, becomes a mercenary and becomes a sorta superhero.
It’s truly a story as old as time itself.
